Tell your girl or guy you love ’em… “Interstellar” style

I try to keep an eye on Etsy in case something Interstellar pops up.  Valentine’s Day is long gone, but it’s never a bad time to tell your girl or guy you love ’em.  That’s where Cooper and DrunkGirlDesigns come in.  Check out this greeting card inspired by the film.

The “Interstellar” Microsoft Paint Challenge: Win a Free T-shirt!

Sometimes in life, you have to make do with very little.  Just ask Doctor Mann.  In that spirit, I’m pleased to announce the Interstellar Microsoft Paint Challenge!  The winner will receive a free t-shirt* from my RedBubble shop.

Here’s the deal.  Using the most rudimentary program at your disposal (for Windows users, it’s Microsoft Paint), depict a scene—any scene—from Interstellar.  It can be one panel or a comic strip.  Submissions must be saved as a Bitmap and use only a basic 64-color palette.  It can be serious; it can be silly; it can be anything you want.

Submit your entry by email to tesseract@quantifiableconnection.com (Subject: MS Paint Challenge) by July 4, 2015.

* Winners have the choice of a unisex t-shirt, unisex tank top, women’s t-shirt, organic t-shirt, or organic women’s t-shirt.

Art of the Week: “S.T.A.Y.” (digital painting)

The Art of the Week comes from DeviantArt artist charlotvanh.  It’s a beautiful digital painting of Murph scrutinizing her father’s watch.  I loved this piece so much that I bought a print from Society6.  It turned out beautifully, so I encourage you to order your own!

I ‘ship’ Brand and Cooper

Have you heard of this thing called “shipping?”  Basically, every film, TV show, or book has a contingent of fans (called “shippers”) who obsess over two characters becoming a couple.  They plaster Tumblr and Twitter with artwork and memes about the prospective romance.

Well, there’s no denying it: I ship the hell out of Brand and Cooper.  Over Interstellar’s 169 minutes, Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey share a compelling rapport that evolves from antagonism to affection. (more…)

Cover of the Week: “Message from Home”

The Cover of the Week comes from YouTube artist Masumi Mutsuda Zapater.  It’s an electric piano rendition of Hans Zimmer’s “Message from Home.”  Stark and understated, it captures the desolate mood of the Endurance rounding Saturn.

Want your own TARS? I’ve got options (and caveats)

Last week, we covered my excitement about the limited-edition Cooper and Brand action figures.  But what about TARS?

Etsy seller BlackwellFixing’s Lego TARS

In December, an industrious eBay seller built a rotatable TARS out of Lego blocks.  The figure, an impressive approximation for a fan-made item, sold for $380.  Even adjusting for post-blight inflation, that’s quite a chunk of change!  Since then, other eBay and Etsy sellers have begun selling their own versions for over $40 a pop.

That’s pretty steep for a replica, isn’t it?  Blogger Thibaut Mottet thought so, too.  That’s why he’s offering free instructions and PSD files to help you assemble Lego TARS yourself.

Steven G’s TARS 3D Printing Kit

Want something a little more sophisticated?  Steven G has released a free 3D printing kit (including STL files, decal inserts, and instructions) for a six-inch plastic TARS.  The model includes TARS’ appendage and is fully rotatable with the use of rare earth magnets.

I’m happy to report that I’m now in my possession of a 3D print of Steven G’s model, thanks to the generosity of two friends.  I’ll keep you updated on assembly!

As for your own TARS, review all the options and see which is right for you.  If you like Steven G’s model but don’t want to do the work yourself, he’ll be selling a better-scaled, fully painted, fully functional version on his website in the coming months.
